About Us

Seattle Civic Dance Theatre (SCDT) was founded as a nonprofit organization in 1985. We offer financial assistance, scholarships, and perform on a professional stage once a year and at local festivals throughout the year.

 

We are an independent organization that works with students from a variety of studios. ​We strive to create a fun, welcoming environment that is free of charge for all dancers. By bringing together students from studios across the Puget Sound region, we foster meaningful connections and friendships!

What We Do

SCDT hosts two free performance opportunities each year and offers scholarships on an annual basis. Find out more below!

Fall

The Magical Doll Maker

Our annual performance of The Magical Doll Maker, an original story ballet.

  • Open auditions in August

  • Ages 8 through 18

  • Rehearsals on Sundays from September - November

  • Rehearsals are held in Burien, WA

  • More than 25 duet and solo roles!

Spring

Dance Festival Northwest

After The Magical Doll Maker, cast members are invited to participate in Dance Festival Northwest, a festival hosted by Southwest Washington Dance Center in Centralia, WA. This serves as an opportunity for dancers from different schools to reconnect after getting to know each other in the fall! SCDT covers participation fees and hotel rooms.

  • Rehearsals on Sundays from February - early March

  • Rehearsals are held in Burien, WA

  • Dancers and chaperones travel together for an overnight stay in Centralia, WA

  • At the festival, dancers:

    • Perform a small group ballet piece

    • Attend master classes in ballet, contemporary and jazz

Summer

Scholarships

We typically open dance scholarship applications in the summer. Eligibility is not limited to current or former SCDT participants.

Mission

To make ballet more accessible to young dancers in the greater Puget Sound area from all backgrounds and abilities through providing scholarships, financial aid and performance opportunities.

Goals

Foster a safe and inspiring performance outlet for young dancers from all backgrounds.

Remove financial barriers and allow full access to ballet training and education for youth dancers in the Puget Sound area. 

Cultivate a community based around SCDT values.
