SCDT Presents The Gift of Dance featuring The Magical Doll Maker

Our annual performance, The Gift of Dance, takes place each year in November. The first act features acts from dance schools across the PNW.

The second act features The Magical Doll Maker, a story ballet by Randie Baker Sadecki. The Magical Doll Maker is a holiday tradition performed each season for over 35 years.

The Magical Doll Maker

Our annual production of The Magical Doll Maker is a ballet with many characters, up to 30 roles are open for audition each year.

The Story

On Christmas Eve, many years ago, in a small village in France, a magical toymaker worked in his shop. The village children would crowd outside the windows, shivering in the cold but delighted by the colorful toys inside. A schoolmistress, Mademoiselle Moire, and her charges had an appointment to visit the toy shopkeeper for a Christmas treat.

The toymaker, Monsieur Grendall, readied his magical dancing dolls for the day. One special doll, unfinished but soon to be his pièce de resistance, he kept hidden from all visitors and especially from overly curious and mischievous children. The incomplete Ballerina Doll was stored behind the boutique’s curtains, away from eager eyes.

The shop was clean, the dolls were on display and Monsieur Grendall thought he was ready for the day’s customers. However, he was not prepared for Mademoiselle Moire’s most curious and most mischievous charge, a girl named Annette. The mayhem and magic that ensues is sure to delight children and adults of all ages.
